Is ListenIn a MacWhisper alternative?

For dictation, yes. For transcribing files, no — ListenIn does not transcribe audio or video files at all. MacWhisper does both, with dictation as one feature of a transcription app; ListenIn does only the dictation half, tuned harder.

MacWhisper is a one-time €64. Why subscribe?

You do not have to: ListenIn sells a $149 one-time licence too. The subscription exists because the default cleanup runs on a hosted model, which has a per-word cost. If you bring your own API key or run Ollama locally, that cost moves to you and the free tier goes a lot further.

Can ListenIn transcribe an interview recording?

No. There is no file import. If that is the job, MacWhisper is the right tool.

Both let me use my own API key. What is different?

The target. MacWhisper applies AI to a transcript you already have. ListenIn applies it to live speech in the moment, which is why it also carries a personal dictionary, correction learning and sound-alike repair for terms that recognition keeps getting wrong.
